Greenbrier Resort History

As of my last update in September 2021, the Greenbrier Resort has a rich history dating back to the late 18th century. Here's an overview of its development and major events through the years:

The Cold War Bunker: One of the most unique aspects of the Greenbrier Resort's history is the existence of a secret underground bunker, known as "The Greenbrier Bunker" or "The Greenbrier Cold War Bunker." Built during the Cold War era, the bunker was intended to serve as an emergency relocation center for the U.S. Congress in the event of a nuclear attack. This top-secret facility was kept hidden until its existence was publicly revealed in 1992.

8. Modern Era: In the latter half of the 20th century and beyond, the Greenbrier Resort continued to evolve and maintain its status as a luxurious destination. The resort added more amenities, including golf courses, tennis courts, spa facilities, and additional accommodations.

9. The Greenbrier Classic: In 2010, The Greenbrier Resort hosted its first PGA Tour event known as "The Greenbrier Classic." It became an annual tournament and attracted top professional golfers.
